Alexander Bennett'in Bushido and the Art of Living (2017) s. 14'te belirttiğine göre bushidō kelimesinin en erken tespiti 1616 tarihli Kōyō Gunkan (甲陽軍鑑) adlı askerî metindir. Yine Bennett'in s. 3'te belirttiğine göre kelime, Nitobe İnazō'nun (新渡戸 稲造) 1899 tarihli Bushido: The Soul of Japan adlı eseri sayesinde geniş kitlelerce duyulmuştur.

As Alexander Bennett states on Bushido and the Art of Living (2017), p. 14, the earliest usage of the word bushidō is in Kōyō Gunkan (甲陽軍鑑), a military text from 1616. And again as Bennett points out on p. 3, this word became known throughout the world with Bushido: The Soul of Japan, a book published by Nitobe Inazō (新渡戸 稲造) in 1899.
